Birding at Lake Artemesia

I’ve been meaning to hit some local parks since moving to Maryland back in May, but I finally had the energy to make it out today to Lake Artemesia in College Park, MD.

There weren’t too many new birds to spot, but I did get to converse with a local birder, spend some time in nature, and brush up on my camera skills. And there were some really cool moments to capture as well!

Almost immediately I stumbled upon a gorgeous great blue heron.

I also spotted them as I was leaving, and managed to get a headshot.

He had a little buddy crouched in some branches not too far away: a green heron.

The mockingbirds were out in spades today, and I spotted a spat that left one’s feathers a bit ruffled.

A Carolina wren told me to talk to the tail! So much sass for such a small bird.

I passed by a robin, and he threw a soulful gaze my way.

The highlight of the outing for me was spotting a double-crested cormorant. I’ve had my difficulties in getting some good pictures of them in the past, so scrambling through some shrubbery was worth it.

Especially when he started sunning himself, not a few feet away from me!

The last birds of the day were a couple of pied-billed grebes (disclaimer: not ducks). They’re frequent divers, and they’re cute to boot!

What a great foray back into birding! I’m looking forward to exploring more of what Maryland has to offer, especially in the way of nature and birding. See you next time!
